The BFSA will gazette-notify the standards before the end of the year. This milestone was achieved with the help of more than 200 experts from Bangladesh and other countries, including 36 from India, who worked pro bono in 27 Technical Working Groups (TWGs) over a period of more than four months and during over 125 virtual meetings.
The standards are not limited to Codex standards but also include standards of the United States of America, the European Union, India, existing Bangladesh standards, Southeast Asian standards, standards of Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), and standards of other relevant countries. Stakeholder groups from food industry experts, government institutions, commodity experts, academics, consumer organizations, and representatives of trade bodies were all involved, ensuring that the drafting process was fully inclusive.
Sanjay Dave, the former Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, praised the project as a unique example of a public-private partnership across borders to enhance cooperation for better regional trade with the help of an equal level of food standards. This project is a great example for other countries.
Indian experts worked in each of the TWGs and offered their services pro bono. This achievement is a great example of cooperation between Bangladesh and India and is a significant milestone for food safety in the region.
To further build leadership in the safe food business, a one-day workshop was held on March 28, following the March 25 announcement. In May, a full five days’ training on Codex will take place with a mock Codex Committee meeting to reinforce capacity in effective participation in Codex.
This achievement is a great step forward for Bangladesh and a significant milestone in food safety in the region. It showcases the commitment of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority to harmonize food safety and quality standards with international standards. The harmonized food standards will improve trade relations and protect the health and safety of consumers.
